Ajapa Japa: The Meditation Technique for an Overactive Mind


If you struggle to stay focused during meditation, Ajapa Japa might be the solution you need. This technique offers multiple points of focus, making it easier to remain grounded and less distracted by intrusive thoughts.


Ajapa Japa is rooted in ancient yogic and tantric traditions, evolving from the Vedic and Upanishadic teachings that emphasize the power of mantra and breath for spiritual development. The practice involves the continuous mental repetition of a mantra, synchronized with the breath. Ujjayi breathing, sometimes referred to as the psychic, whispering, ocean, hissing, or victorious breath, is used to create a soft, soothing sound while slowing the breath.


While any mantra can be used, "So-Ham" or "Ham-So" is most commonly chosen, as it naturally aligns with the rhythm of breathing—'So' on the inhalation and 'Ham' (pronounced “haaam”) on the exhalation. As you progress, your awareness is directed along specific pathways in the body, beginning with the navel to the throat and eventually following the spinal pathway. Over time, the repetition of the mantra becomes more automatic, leading to a deep state of meditation where the mind is quieted, and inner awareness is heightened.


Regular practice of Ajapa Japa not only reduces stress, improves focus, and enhances emotional well-being but also helps in lowering the risk of chronic diseases by promoting relaxation and balancing the body's physiological systems.
