Embodied Yoga Practice: Understanding Mapping, Proprioception, and Interoception

In the style of Yoga I teach, mapping, proprioception, and interoception are key concepts. Here is a simplified overview of these three concepts and how you will explore them in a yoga class with me:

  • Mapping: Every movement we make is mapped on the brain through practice. Think of how dexterous our hands are compared to our feet. Yet, some people born without arms develop almost as much skill using their toes and feet as those with hands do with their hands. Well-mapped movements are skilful, graceful, and can become second nature. In a yoga class, mapping involves moving with clear intention and mental awareness of the body as it moves through postures. The movements are repeated with as much comfort and ease as possible. This curious, slow, careful attention and repetition help clarify the “maps” of the movements on the brain, resulting in easier, more skilful overall movement. To better map our movements, we work on developing our senses of:

  • Proprioception: This is the awareness of the body's position and movement in the space around you during postures and rest. It improves balance, stability, and confidence, and is a key factor in maintaining our quality of life as we age.

  • Interoception: This is the awareness of internal body sensations, such as breath, heartbeat, and muscle tension and tone, as well as the amount of effort and ease in our movements and positions. In yoga practice, we make time to notice these things, helping you tune into your body's signals and promoting a healthy and safe range of movement in class and day by day. It also enables better self-care and stress management in everyday life.

For instance, right now, as I write, my sense of interoception is letting me know that I am thirsty and my shoulders are beginning to ache because I have been at my computer too long. So, I shall end here, have some water, and go for a walk!
